War-rag ('forward' or 'ahead' in the Cornish language) is a co-operative film initiative put together over the past two years by an unpaid management group of experienced freelance film and television practitioners.
Our core management is Hana Backland, John Crooks, Paul Farmer, Laura Hardman, Brett Harvey, Mark Jenkin and Steve Tanner, all established and experienced members of the Cornish film community.
Cornish filmmakers have created a unique practice that has much to offer the world. War-rag aims to raise the profile of our resourceful and innovative ways of working by drawing attention to their commercial validity on a wider scale. War-rag drives to achieve economic independence for the Cornish film industry when current funding schemes are over by creating a perception of Cornish film as a movement, much like that of Dogme95 in Denmark.
Our way of working is very different to that of the hierarchical, creaky beast that is large-scale commercial movie making. We do not believe in hype. We believe in hard work, communication and one shared focus. Most of all we believe in a good story well told and well shot. War-rag welcomes creative input from every one of its cast and crew members and views this inclusion as vital to its success.
By pooling our resources and expertise we ensure that we get the very best from kit and crew. Because of our collective model of working, War-rag is able to operate in such a self-contained manner that the need to "import" people or equipment from far afield is eradicated completely.
War-rag aims to create productions and networks to engage both experienced and developing Cornish film and media workers with the industry in Britain, Europe and the World. We have a number of projects in development and are always on the lookout for exciting new ideas and new people to work with. War-rag is a community and we encourage you to get involved, get in touch and find out more.
